Male soldiers were not the only ones suffering or even contributing to the cause on either side. American women filled with patriotism for their country (both the Confederate States and the Union) picked up their guns and headed out to help. Some women fought on the battle fields some healed wounded soldiers, and some found other ways to contribute to the war efforts. Today we are going to explore the roles that women played in the American Civil War
What did Women do?
Get ready we are about to do some serious math! Please direct your attention forward as I give you directions....
OK! Now that we have counted off into 1s and 2s let's start the lesson.
1s will explore the slides on the Union side and the 2s will explore the slides on the Confederate side. Make sure you take notes while exploring. When you reach the slide the says "Stop".... STOP! Wait for the rest of the class to finish and we will continue from there. To indicate you are done, partially close your computer so the screen is down.
To view the PowerPoint on a full screen, click on the last icon to the right on the tool bar directly above the slide. Then set the zoom to 74%... and boom ready to go.
Now that everyone is finished researching, let's pair up. Partner with a person that has the opposite number from you (1s with 2s, no 1s and 1s or 2s and 2s). Go back to the PowerPoint and discuss the questions on the slide show in pink. Record your answers. When everyone is done we will discuss these answers. Then as a class we will talk about a few more questions in the slide show.
Homework:
Construct a letter , either in response to a letter from a woman back home, or to a soldier out at war. The letter should contain information about what is happening at home (work, food rations, children, military movement) and should have a personal and creative storyline. (no more than 2 pages, no less than ½ page)
