Todays lesson will focus on the Holocaust that took place during World War II, in Europe

.

To understand the Holocaust, through the study of Anti-Semitic propaganda and values, the belief of Aryan supremacy, the systematic attempts to rid Europe of all Jewish people, and tactics used by the Nazi’s to discriminate against the Jewish population (Boycotts, threats, segregation, imprisonment and mass murder)

Objectives
a)Students will be able to analyze the Holocaust as a whole and be able to appraise the effects that this even had on the Jewish population.
b)Students will be able to discuss the tactics that the Nazi Party used to discriminate against the Jews.
c)Students will be able to summarize the belief of Aryan supremacy.
d)Students will be able to discuss and state the conditions found at liberation of the concentration camps in occupied Europe.

Activity

Students will using there knowledge of World War II, thus far, to help explain the political and economical conditions in Europe, along with the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party in Germany, and how these events/conditions contributed to extermination of +/- 12 million people (+/- 6 million Jews)

1) Class Discussion/ Group Discussion: These questions will be used to evaluate what students may already know about the Holocaust.

1. How do people learn prejudice?
2. What does prejudice mean to me?
3. Can anyone explain, when in history has there been examples of extreme prejudice?

2) Give a brief lecture about the holocaust.


3) The students will work with an interactive PowerPoint that I have created to help them understand some of the larger aspects of the Holocaust.



4) After the completion of the lecture and the interactive PowerPoint let the students have an open discussion in which they can ask any questions that they may have about the Holocaust.

Summary
1) At the end, discuss questions which fall along theses lines
1. What questions come to mind with a study about the Holocaust and….
A. the world we live in today?
B. life in the United States?
C. other periods in human history?
D. war, the making of enemies, and the ethics of warfare?
E. the effects of prejudice and discrimination and the existence of hate groups?
F. human behavior and its impact on other human beings?

2) This is the time that you want to make sure you students are understanding the topics such as prejudice and discrimination.

Evaluation
The student will need to creat an interactive PowerPoint, in groups of 3 or 4. In these groups they will assigned one of the other genocides that has taken place durring the 20th Century. After completing there PowerPoint, they will present their finding to the class. This will be graded on interactiveness, creativity, and historical content.

  • The educated, artists, technicians, former government officials, monks, and minorities by Pol Pot in Cambodia
  • Tutsi minority by Hutu in Rwanda
  • Muslims and Croats by Bosnian Serbs in former Yugoslavia
