Lesson One: Captains of Industry Internet Activity

Students will evaluate and explore the key figures who influenced American Industry during the rise of big business.

Focus Question

Between the Civil War and World War I America transformed from an agricultural to an industrialized nation. What industries do you think were created in order to help America make this transformation?

Warm Up

The class will discuss the people who worked in the industries and turned America into the industrialized the nation that it became. We will discuss where these people were originally from
and why they decided to come to America.

Lesson


1. I will lecture on the rise of big business, and the creation of a national market from transportation advances.
2. Students will choose to work with three or four of their classmates.
3. Students will be given the Captains of Industry Internet Activity, so they will be able to write down the answers to the questions.
4. I will explain the activity to the students and they will be completing the assignment in the computer lab. The students are to click on the pictures of the men from the spread sheet, which are hyperlinks to websites that will assist the students in answering the questions. The students are to explore all the websites. This activity will introduce students to the individuals who impacted industry in America in different ways.
5. The Students and I will go to the computer lab, and they understand that they can not begin until I approve. I will show the students how to make their own internet activity. Each group is to find three pictures that have to deal with the rise of big business and America changing from an agricultural to a industrialized nation. Each group will have to come up with four questions for each picture.

Evaluation

At the end of class, each group will share their interesting facts that they learned about Rockefeller, Ford, and Carnegie. Students will try to introduce their peers to new facts that they did not already know. Also, each group will share their internet activities and explain their pictures and why they chose the pictures.
