Lesson Two: African Americans in the Post Reconstruction South


Students will investigate what life was like for African Americans during the Post-Reconstruction Era.

Focus Question

What happened to the freed slaves that lived in the South? Did they stay in the South or did they leave? What quality of life did they have and how did people treat them after the Civil War?

Warm Up

A class review of how life changed after the Civil War, especially for the "freemen" and former slaves.

Lesson

  1. I will briefly lecture on SOL USII.3c racial segregation and the Jim Crow Laws. This lesson will take about two class periods on different days.
  2. I will show students what a good and bad example of a power point presentations. There will be guidelines for the students to follow when they are making their own powerpoint projects. I will show the students my powerpoint on racial segregation and the Jim Crow Laws.
  3. Students will go to the library and they will research a topic of their choice, which may include a person who was involved in the resistance of racial segregation, a state that legally enforced racial segregation, or a group that supported or opposed racial segregation. If a student would like to choose their own topic on this era, then they need to get my approval. The students have to construct a well researched outline before going into the computer lab.
  4. The students will go to the computer lab and I will teach them how to create a good powerpoint presentation. Student are required to incorporate their 1 1/2 page paper from their homework into the presentation. The students papers are in the view pointof a person that lived in the late 19th century that witnessed or felt the effects of racial segregation. Their powerpoints have a minimum of five slides.
  5. Students will have three daysto finish their presentations at home for homework. On presentation day, students will present their powerpoints to the class.


Evaluation

I will give a brief review of racial segregation and the Jim Crow Laws. I will ask the students to write down on a piece of paper three good examples of Jim Crow Laws, and to also write two states that enforced the laws. They will turn this quiz in for a grade.
