Lesson Five: Review of How Life Dramatically Changed After the Civil War
Life changed for basically all Americans after the Civil War. We have learned about western expansion, the developement of cities, and the increased immigration to the United States. Even though slavery ended in America, racial segregation still existed and African Americans still faced constraints in the post-Reconstruction South.
Focus Question
When do you think racial segregation ended in America? Do you think there are still aspects of racial segregation in society today? What about other societies around the world?
Warm Up
A class review of how the United States was structurally and economically left when the Civil War ended. What was life like for northerners, southerners, and freed slaves?
Lesson
The class will continue with the review of how life changed after the Civil War. This review session is to help prepare the students for their test on SOL USII.3a,b,c,d,e.
I will explain to the students that they will be creating their own trifold using Microsoft Word. They are to choose one topic from SOL USII.3a-e. These topics may be on western expansion, immigration to the U.S., development of cities, new inventions, racial segregation and the rise of "Jim Crow," the Progressive Movement which involves child labor, the temperance movement, women's suffrage, and working conditions. Other topics are permitted, but only if permission is granted.
I will take the students to the computer lab and I will teach them how to make their own trifold. I will show the trifold that I made, which is a review on SOL USII.3a-e.
The students will use their textbook, classnotes, and the internet to construct their trifold.
Once the students have made their trifold, they will present their trifolds to the class. This help them review before the test.
